Tokyo Treat, April Box Review

Hello everyone! I'm back with another review! This time it's a subscription box called, Tokyo Treat! It's a subscription based box that delivers Japanese snacks and candies every month. They have three sizes that you can choose from: Small, Regular and Premium. The size I'm going to be reviewing today will be the Regular size. If you want to subscribe or want more information about Tokyo Treat, click here.

So first I'll talk about the shipping. All three sizes have free shipping with is awesome because shipping from Japan can be very expensive. My box was shipped on April 5th and it arrived on April 15th. You don't get a tracking number but the site gives you an estimated time frame of when to expect your package. The box itself was open as you can tell by the seals on the box being torn in the picture above before I got it from the mail carrier but I suppose those who opened it were customs. Fortunately nothing was taken so I don't mind it as much.
When you open the box, the first thing you see is the list of everything that is included in whichever box you order.
List of goodies included in the box
Since I got the Regular box I get what's on the small and regular snacks. If you choose the Small box then you only get what's on the far left and if you buy the Premium box, you get everything. Simple, right?
snacks included in the April box (regular)
I'll be going in order from the small to the regular according to the list and at the end of each little review I will give a number from 1-10, 10 being the best and 1 being the worst.

So first on the list is The Japanese Dagashi Set (Cabbage Taro Chips and Tonkatsu flavored Umaibo)
They actually sent me two umaibo
Let's start with the Cabbage Taro, I was a bit skeptical because it's supposed to taste like cabbages. That's exactly how it smelled like when I opened the bag but surprise surprise, it wasn't that bad!
this is how they look like
They were very light and fluffy, it can be compared to the same texture of cheetos puffs. The taste was of cabbage but it wasn't overpowering like I had assumed.
I give Cabbage Taro an 8.

Next is Umaibo, Tonkatsu flavor. If you don't know what tonkatsu is, it's pretty much a pork cutlet battered in panko and deep fried.
I could smell a mix of ketchup and corn when I first opened the package. Just like the Cabbage Taro, it has a fluffy texture but this time its one big cylinder with a hollow center.

The umaibo was really good and I was glad I got two so I could share! Since it's so light and fluffy, it doesn't really fill you up but it is only a snack so I suppose it shouldn't.
I give the Tonkatsu Umaibo a 9.

Second on the list is Strawberry Hi Chew! (Japanese packaging)

different packaging from one sold in USA
So when I saw this was on the list, I instantly knew that I would love it. I think the Japanese packaging is more appealing than the one I've seen sold here in the USA. I think it looks more spring like? Maybe its just me, haha!  When I opened it, the scent of strawberry didn't instantly hit my nose but I believe that has to do with the individual wrapped candies. Once unwrapped I could smell the delicious strawberry flavor.

pink exterior, white filling: opposite of the one sold in USA
It tastes just like the strawberry hi chew you find here in the states. The texture is just like the others, chewy and a bit sticky. Definitely one of my favorites of this box!
I give it a 9!

Third is Puccho Gummy!

So this was another candy I loved from this box! One thing that did disappoint me was the packaging. On the list it says that it comes in a unique container similar to this one shown here. I don't know if it just happened to me or what, but I was looking forward to playing with it. Aside from that, the candy itself was great. It's texture is just like the hi chew I've talked about before except for it's unique center.

its difficult to see but there is white in the center; almost unnoticeable
It has this small little pocket in the center that holds a powder or something close to it. It begins to fizz and leaves your mouth with a refreshed feeling once it is all gone.
I give it an 8.5!

Fourth on the list is Pretz Salad Biscuits
These look like pocky sticks but without the sweet coating of either chocolate, strawberry, matcha, etc. I took a small taste of the biscuit stick and it was okay until I got the flavor of cheese in the end. I'm not a big fan of cheese so I didn't like them. I recommend them to anyone who likes cheese. It mostly tastes like garlic bread with a second taste of cheese.
I give these a 5.

Fifth on the list, Marching Koalas: Chocolate edition!

Aren't the koalas cute?!
The packaging has to be the cutest I've seen! and the cookies are even cuter!
As you can see, each cookie has a printed panda doing something different, for example eating cake, sleeping, drinking coffee, etc. The cookies were soft but not too soft and the chocolate was soft and smooth.

The chocolate itself didn't fill the whole cookie, instead it's only coated on one side but it was just enough to make the cookie taste delicious. It was really difficult to stop myself from eating all of the cookies in one bite! They were that delicious.
I give them a 9!

Sixth and final for the Small size is Super String Gummy.
126cm of gummy fun! (so I thought)
So its only a single piece of gummy that is to stretch out 126 cm according to the package. I would have measured it but the smell of grape did not let me. As soon as I opened the package it came it, the strong smell of grape hit me like a ton of bricks!
out of the package
I tried the dark purple side first, it had a strong artificial grape flavor. Then I tried the green side. This was not as strong as the purple side. I'm a fan of grape but this candy just wasn't for me. The smell itself cause me to get a headache and the taste was just not for me.
I give it a 6.

The next items will be from what you can find in the regular sized box along with the top mentioned snacks.
The big difference, aside from the amount of candy, is that the regular size comes with one diy kit! I'll be reviewing the diy kit at the end and making another post about how to use it later on.

First one of the list is Pocky Demitasse!

This year's (2015) limited edition Pocky! It's a small box that contains 15 mini pocky sticks. Instead of regular biscuits these are made out of cocoa and are covered in dark chocolate.
A bit thicker than regular pocky and smaller in length

I loved these pocky because I love dark chocolate! They were a bit bitter but that's to be expected of dark chocolate.
I give them a 10!

Second on the list is Choco Ball!

When I first saw this was on the list I burst out laughing. I laughed because I've seen the japanese commercials on youtube. They are not the regular chocolate balls, these are strawberry flavored with small rice krispies inside.

The rice krispies are difficult to see but you can definitely feel them when you chew on them. The strawberry was a very delicious flavor, reminded me of strawberry pocky. Its a pretty small box, I wish I had more!
I give it a 10!

Third on the list is the Cola Cotton Candy.

I was really excited for this one since I have never tasted soda cotton candy before. This is what it looks like:

It smells just like soda, more on the side of Pepsi. It was a disappointment though as soon as I took a taste. It tasted like very warm soda, yuck. The cotton candy doesn't dissolve completely and it forms almost like a gum consistency.
I give it a 6.

Fourth are Consomme Chips

These chips were absolutely delicious! When I opened them I was a little disappointed because the bag was only halfway full...
Aside from that, the chips were delicious. The texture was light and the chips broke easier than American chips. The taste reminded me of Pringles Pizza flavor. If I could find these in local stores I would definitely buy them frequently.
I give them an 8.

And now lastly the DIY
here's a stock photo, I forgot to take a picture of it
Now how to make the candy was fairly easy, it has easy to follow instructions on the back. Even if you don't know how to read Japanese, the pictures are pretty self explanatory.

I will flat out say I did not like this candy. I liked the whole DIY, make your own candy and then eat it. That part was great, but the candy itself, the purple candy was just not for me. It was an overpowering grape flavor and it had a slight fizz to it. The small colorful candies tasted way better by themselves rather than combined with the candy.
I give the candy a 5; the actual DIY part 8.

That's all the snacks that came in the Regular size box! Overall I was quite pleased with what came in the April Tokyo Treat Subscription box! There were a few that I rather not have again but that's the fun of getting a surprise subscription box! You never know what you will get!

Thanks for reading! /(  ≧ ⋏ ≦ )\
